You know the password, but every viewer keeps asking for it before print or copy. Unlock PDF opens the file with that password and writes an unprotected copy you can edit, merge, or archive without typing the secret again.
Reach for unlock when a client sent an owner-password PDF, when a scanner locked a batch by default, or when you need to merge chapters that each ask for credentials. This only works if you already know the password. It is not a cracker or a bypass for documents you cannot open elsewhere.
Pitfall: confusing user-password open with owner-password restrictions. If the file opens but print is blocked, unlock (with the owner password) is still the right path before Protect PDF re-applies a policy you control.
Tip: after unlock, run Compress or Organize on the free file, then Protect again if distribution still needs a password.
Decryption and rewrite happen in the PDF studio tab. The password and document bytes stay on your machine for this job.

It depends on the operation. Merge/split/rotate usually preserve page content; compression or rasterisation can affect visual fidelity. Preview results before discarding the original.
