SEO vs GEO vs AEO: What Businesses Need to Know in 2026

Google still matters. So do AI answers that cite (or skip) your site. Here’s a plain map of SEO, GEO, and AEO - and what to do first.

Part of the AI Search Visibility series.

People still Google things. They also ask chat assistants and AI-mode search for a finished answer. Boards keep hearing three acronyms in the same meeting: SEO, GEO, and AEO.

They’re related. They’re not the same product. And nobody needs a vendor deck promising “AI rankings” you can’t verify.

What the terms actually mean

SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Still the base layer. Pages that crawl cleanly, say something useful, load okay, link to related pages, and earn some trust over time. Google’s public advice keeps pointing at people-first content and solid technical hygiene - not gimmicks built only for bots.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)

Here the goal shifts: show up as a cited source inside an AI-written answer. Clear entities, original explanations, and quotable definitions help. Ranking #3 on classic search helps too, but it’s no longer a 1:1 map to getting cited.

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)

Think “direct answer” surfaces: featured snippets, voice replies, chat-style summaries. Short answers near the top of a page, FAQs, and clean Q&A blocks tend to travel well here.

What actually shifted by 2026

  • More informational questions get answered inside the product - fewer forced clicks to a blue link.
  • Top-10 rankings and AI citations overlap less automatically than they did a year ago. Treat them as cousins, not twins.
  • Agentic shopping demos look cool. Most small businesses still win more by fixing basics than by optimizing for agents.

What to do in order

  1. Pages that answer a real job - not keyword wallpaper.
  2. Technical SEO: indexation, Core Web Vitals, clean URLs, sitemap, canonicals.
  3. Topic clusters with internal links that make sense (we wrote about internal linking).
  4. Answer-ready sections: definitions, steps, FAQs, comparison tables.
  5. Measurement: organic clicks, branded search, assisted conversions, and AI referral/citation reports when you can get them. Skip the “guaranteed ranking” pitch.

Where private tools fit

Drafting meta copy, schema JSON, or a brief with staging data? Keep that local. Use SEO tools and JSON Formatter in the browser, then push the finished bits through your CMS.

FAQ

Does GEO replace SEO?

Nope. Most citation systems still lean on the open web. Thin pages and broken crawl paths hurt classic rankings and generative visibility together.

Where should a small business start?

Fix crawl issues, rewrite the unhelpful pages, build one strong cluster around your main service, add clear FAQs. Expand after that works.
